Why does the dress change colour?

This has been doing everyones head in all day, the world has been divided into team white and gold and team black and blue but why? does it depend on your mood? your intelligence? your attitude? We’ve heard all kinds of crazy theoriess this morning but here is the real reason:

Above you can see how the dress looks in different lights,  the actual dress is blue and black and the image below will have the people who see white and gold (like me) in disbelief, yes its the SAME dress!

Basically when we look at objects we interpret different colours by the wavelengths that reflect off the object. These waves hit our retina and then our brain converts those signals into images. The light surrounding objects would change the colour but “Our visual system is supposed to throw away information about the illuminant and extract information about the actual reflectance,” says Jay Neitz, a neuroscientist at the University of Washington.

Basically in this particular image for some people their perception overpowers the information we are receiving which is very rare. Those rays of the light in the top right hand corner make some people think of how that dress should look. For me it has a blue tinge because of the light behind it but its actually white and that is what I really see because I have bullied my brain into believing that. If your still in disbelief cut out a piece of the dress and look at it without any of the other information in that picture. When I look at the cut out piece..its blue so without that perception interfering it is blue!

I was always terrible at art and one day I was told to copy the picture I was drawing upside down, It was a horse in a field with a house in the background, when I turned both pictures the right way round the likeness was uncanny and I felt like a true artist! That was because when I knew what the picture was my perception always interfered and made me copy it differently to what I saw so its no surprise that I see the dress white and gold! I’m gonna take it as a strength that I have the ability to create what I believe haha! yay for team white and gold!!

What colour do you see?

Brit Awards Red Carpet Highlights

It certainly looked like the end of awards season as the red carpet was a little bit of a bore. Seemed like everyone had used up their best outfits for the Grammys and Oscars but there were a few that saved the best till last! Rita Ora looked fabulous, she went for a very classic look with an embellished gold playsuit and blonde pixie crop. Her makeup was demure with smoky eyes and we thought she got it spot on! Paloma Faith looked great in a strapless black and red gown and Taylor Swift went for the same colour scheme and looked stunning. Kim Kardashian put together a nice statement outfit but we thought a long fishtail skirt would have made it more red carpet savvy, anyways she made the cut. Our biggest surprise was Ellie Goulding, last year she looked like she had her dress made on My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding but this year she was show-stopping in a white floor-length gown!

Madonna Falls on stage at the Brit Awards

We thought it was amazing how Madonna got back up again after falling and carried on, her lyrics were pretty ironic too

“Took me to heaven let me fall down, now that its over I’m gonna carry on..”

and she did carry on so Bravo! We can’t imagine what it must be like to fall in front of the world like that but hopefully next time she will have a cape that comes off more easily. We noticed the dancers are meant to pull it off her but because she couldn’t detach it, when they pulled it she went flying with it. We aren’t the biggest fans of her music but we definitely admire the way she coped in that situation!

DIY Lip Scrub

Often the weather can cause dry, chapped lips or even just being dehydrated. This is great to do before applying lipstick to banish any flaky lip-skin that totally ruins that perfect pout! We just made a little jar of the mixture which you apply using circular motions and then wipe away with cotton wool soaked in water. You can finish by applying a lip balm.

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1 teaspoon natural honey
  • Small jar
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil, sweet almond oil or sunflower oil
  • 2 teaspoons granulated brown or white sugar
  • 1 to 2 drops essential oil (optional)
  • Lemon juice (optional)
  • Cotton balls
  • Moisturizer or lip balm
