Sephora Make-up Haul Tried and Tested

Yesterday I had a bit of a make-up haul in Sephora! I am always excited to get home and try my new goodies out and that is exactly what I did!!

I had never tried Marc Jacobs make-up before and the Make-up Forever HD concealer I use in shade 335 is always sold out so I decided to look for a new one. I have quite oily skin and had heard that the Marc Jacobs ReMarcable concealer is Oil free, instead it contains a special blend of soy protein, shea butter, and coconut extract. I loved the way it felt on my skin, I also use Bobbi Browns concealer and this one is similar but a lot lighter in texture, not as thick and creamy and great for building coverage. Recently my circles have gotten quite dark so I opted for the pot rather then the lighter coverage pen and I am really happy with it. Remember to always set your concealer with a powder to prevent cracks forming and try and carry a beauty blender to smooth it all back into place on a night out.

I absolutely love the Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon too, the shade of black is really intense and when you first apply it you can smudge it for a smoky look but after it sets and it wont budge, exactly what you need in this humid weather! If you have oily skin its always better to finish with a little black eye-shadow on top to absorb any excess moisture and stop lines forming on your lid.

I have used Benefits Bad Gal mascara for years and I have tried Real Eyes but I just love the wand on Bad Gal, it thickens, lengthens lifts and separates which is all you need from a mascara.

I tried Sephora Extreme Liquid Lipstick in shade 10, it looks great but it dries very sticky and has a horrible texture. I managed to solve this problem by dabbing a creamy lipstick on top. My lip tip is to always use a liner to accentuate your cupids bow and then fill your lips in and really go as high as you can into your cupids bow to get that definition.

I picked up Sephora’s Pro Angled Liner Brush #22 Its great for liner but for this tutorial I used it to fill in my eyebrows. I also picked up a replacement Pro Angled Blush Brush #49. Mine had seen better days and I love the angle for contouring and the fluffiness to blend.

I definitely would re-stock on all of them except the sticky liquid lipstick! Feel free to leave your comments and questions.

20 Questions About Make-up

I got these questions a couple of weeks ago from the lovely Laila, sorry its a little late but finally found time to answer them! I love receiving your emails! Your requests help me to know what you enjoy reading so keep them coming ❤

Do you remember your first make-up item?

My mum bought me a Tinkerbell kids make-up set when I was 5 and I was completely obsessed with it!

Describe your perfect mascara. Have you found one that fits your specifications?

I like mascaras that separate and push up your lashes without leaving clumps. For really dramatic lashes I use Dior Show, its really black and gives loads of volume and thickness but its REALLY hard to take off… that’s the downside. I love
Bad Gal by Benefit and Clump Defy by Maxfactor, the wand is amazing, you can use any mascara and define and remove clumps with that wand after.

What kind of coverage do you prefer from foundation?

I like good coverage that looks natural, Makeup Forever’s HD Foundation and Chanel’s Vitalumiere Aqua are my favourites.

Favourite high end brand?
I don’t actually have one, if you look at my make-up collection you will find it is very mixed but I would say the items I couldn’t live without are made by Chanel, Bobbi Brown and Make up Forever.

What cosmetic brands have you always wanted to try but still haven’t?

Favourite drugstore brand?

Do you wear fake eyelashes?
No, I only wore them once to a fancy dress party.

Is there any kind of make-up you can’t leave the house without?
I never leave the house without make up unless I’m going to the pool lol but bare minimum would be concealer and bronzer

What is your most cherished beauty product?
My Chanel Bronzer ^^^ I have used it since I was 15 and cannot live without it.

How often do you shop for make-up? Do you like to pick up an item here and there or get lots of goodies at once?
A bit of both, before I used to shop for make-up a lot more often but now I tend to make a list of what I need and then go on a bit of a haul, I do pick up items off the list too as I like to try new things and sometimes if I see offers while I’m shopping I’ll get some bits.

Do you have a beauty secret?
Hmm not really because I like to share all my beauty secrets with you guys! umm…let me think…. I hate wasting products so if my lipstick is almost finished or breaks I scoop it out and mix it into one of my lip balms or with Vaseline to make it tinted. If one of my eye-shadows cracks I spray make-up fixing spray on top of it put a tissue on it and then a 1 dirham coin or 10p and apply pressure for 30 seconds, when you lift it its as good as new! (obviously change the object you apply pressure with depending on the shape and size) Also you know when your powder/blusher/bronzer compacts are about to finish and there’s some around the edges that eventually cracks I mix them into my bronzing pearls (if they are similair shades).

What type of product do you buy the most of?
Lipsticks and lip-glosses

Do you avoid certain ingredients in cosmetics like parabens or sulfates?

I try to read ingredients and pick up the ones with less but generally they are difficult to avoid! I also always do a lead test with lipsticks, put the lipstick on your hand, rub a gold ring on it and see if the lipstick colour turns black, if so it contains lead.

Do you have a favourite place to shop for makeup?

In London the beauty floor in Selfridges is like Paradise for me, seriously I’m like a kid in a candy shop and in Dubai its gotta be Sephora!

Do you like trying new skincare products or do you keep a certain routine?
I love trying new skincare products, I always feel my skin becomes immune to a product after a certain time and the industry is constantly churning out new and improved formulas. I am a Clarisonic convert though, I will use that forever with different products.

Favourite bath and body brand?
Sanctuary, OMG that sugar scrub ❤

Do you like multifunctional products like lip and cheek stains?
No, So far I find they always do one better then the other and I never use them for both.

Are you clumsy in putting makeup?
No

Do you ever consider taking makeup classes?
Yes! I want to learn special effects makeup.

What do you love about makeup?
What don’t I love? I love all the colours, textures and packaging. I love how you can use products to enhance your natural beauty and it probably shouldn’t but I definitely feel make-up gives me more confidence. It changes the way so many women feel covering those things we hate people seeing like spots, pigmentation, scars, yeah… I LOVE MAKEUP!!

Sarah’s Smoky Look

MyCollage_4_resized20130816_162709_resized

Smoky eyes suit every single eye colour because they just add that intensity making your eyes look lighter or brighter. Sarah has beautiful brown eyes and you can see in the before and after how it really makes her eyes appear lighter and stand out. I create smoky eyes with layers of colour so I work with a dark urban decay eye palette with 3 or four shades of greys and blacks. I brushed all over her eyelid with a silvery grey then took a more granite colour and worked it into the creases of her eyes. I took a black and added it to the outer corners and worked it inwards in the crease of the eye not going too far in. Then I took a charcoal black and worked it along the outer lash-line and then blended everything in. I added some eye-shadow under the eye and smudged it a little then finished with quite a thick L’oreal liquid liner and lashings of Maybelline Mascara.

If you look at the previous makeover I did on Ruth you can see the difference with how high I took the eye-shadow, on Sarah I stayed around the crease of the eye and left the space under the eyebrow, you could make the look more dramatic if you went up a little higher but I think this was just enough. If you stayed below the crease this would become more of a casual look.

Smoky eyes really make your eyes the focal point of your face and you can literally mute the rest which is exactly what I did. I evened out her skin-tone with some Body Shop Mineralise Foundation, brightened under the eyes with a Pixi concealer to make them stand out that little more. Then I contoured her nose with Pixi’s neutralise palette, sculpted her cheekbones and finished with a nude Benefit lipstick. This is a great evening look!

Ruth’s Summery Look

MyCollage_2_resized

Ruth explained that she normally uses a darker palette on her eyes, I could understand why as that would really bring out her gorgeous green eyes. Darker shades are great for evenings but I wanted to do something different, since we were going to a pool party/BBQ I thought it would be nice to do a bronzed look and then add some colour to her usual eye palette. I used a Sleek Palette and blended copper with turquoise on her eyelid and then took a brown eye-shadow up to her brow bone. When you have smaller eye-lids you can wear your eye-shadow really high, it gives you the illusion of bigger eyes. I have bigger eye-lids so if I did that I would end up looking like a drag queen. I only ever wear high eye-shadow for costume parties or if I need an OTT look. Its really important to recognize your features and work to enhance them, I’ve seen people try to copy a beautiful make-up look and it just looks terrible because they didn’t consider how to adapt things to suit there features.

I highlighted under Ruth’s brow and used an eyebrow pencil to add more definition, then I finished with a metallic turquoise liner under the eyes and two coats of Benefit Bad Gal mascara. I added a MAC bronzer and a little Inglot coral blush and highlighted on her cheek-bones and nose. I finished with a Lancome coral lip-gloss, I thought it was perfect for the summery look I was going for and it really suited her.

5 High Street Essentials To Enhance Your Natural Beauty

Image

This post is for Sarahjane08, I love getting your feedback and emails and will always try and do what I can to help you guys out. Sarah said she is on a budget and wanted to know what are good affordable products. When it comes to Fashion and Beauty I really don’t believe you need to spend money to look good. I have a mixture of high street and high end products and believe you can always rock what you’ve got.

I want to share 5 high street products that will transform your face and I have used them on my face to demonstrate how you can go from being a plain jane (no pun intended Sarahjane08 lol) to really enhancing what you’ve got.

Image

my 1st essential is a good concealer, I love L’oreals truematch range and used it under and a little on top of my eyelids, on blemishes and any areas that are generally darker just to balance out my skintone. Concealer makes you look refreshed and is definitely my number 1 product.

My 2nd must have is Clump Defy Mascara by False Lash Effect from Maybelline. This mascara was given to me at the Viva Beauty Awards and it is just as good as Benefits Bad Gal and Diorshow for just a fraction of the price. No surprise that it won beauty product of the year!

Thirdly I used L’oreals Super Liner Carbon Gloss. Eyeliner is a great way to define your eyes and really make them stand out. I know a lot of women struggle with applying liquid liners but there are some great youtube tutorials to help you out or try a gel liner for more control.

My 4th product is No.7’s High Shine gloss in a shade called smile by Boots. I love nude’s and natural pinks on lips and this is one of my favourite shades.

The final product I used is Topshops Glow Pot in Gleam. I used that in the inner corners of my eyes just to make my eyes pop a little more. I also applied some on my cheek bones and under my eyebrows to make them more defined.

If you use your makeup correctly it can really enhance what you have and learn how to make it give you what you don’t have (I create more sculpted cheeks with highlighter and contouring under my cheek bones). If you have big round eyes make your eyeline more straight at the ends to make your eyes longer, If your eyes are too close together, start your liner in the middle of your eye to create space between them.

Hope this helped Sarah x

A Refreshing Makeover

ImageI had 15 minutes to give Layan a quick makeover. She wanted something natural and fresh so I decided to stick with a pink dewy palette.

I began by applying L’oreals Truematch Foundation in D/W5 Gold Sand, I usually apply with a foundation brush and blend out with a flat Kabuki or Stipler but as I was pressed for time I went straight in with the Kabuki. I then took a light shade from Pixi’s neutralising kit and brushed it down the centre of the nose and under the eyes just to brighten and slightly contour. I sealed it in by patting Givenchy’s Loose Powder Prism Libre in Sweet Caramel, powders absorb excess product and keep the foundation matt allowing it to last longer.

I used Topshops Glow Pot in Shade Gleam to highlight under the brow with a Pencil Brush. Then I put Urban Decay’s Tainted eyeshadow shade all over the eyelid and added shade Deeper into the crease of the eye making the eyes bigger and more defined. I took a gel liner with a eyeliner brush and applied it along the lash line. I didn’t go over it with a liquid liner as I wanted to keep it as natural as possible. I finished the eyes with 2 layers of Clinique’s black Mascara.

I applied Givenchys lip liner in shade no.1 and then coloured in the lip with Lancome’s colour fever shine in 306. These lipsticks are really moisturising and have a glossy finish, not too shiny but just a little dewy to give you that fresh fuller lip.

Then I took my Large Angled Contour Brush and applied M.A.C’s Bronzing Powder in limited edition shade Solar Riche in the hollows of the cheeks to contour. I applied Benefits Coralista above the hollow on the cheek bone and then a touch of Bobbi Browns Shimmer Brick just above the Cheekbone to highlight and add another dimension. This is great to do on rounder faces as it gives you a more chiselled look.

Layans fresh and dewy look is complete 🙂
