Zizzleblog’s Summer Skin Essentials

IMG_20170529_120339_924Summer is almost here and nobody wants a full face of make-up in this sweltering heat but that doesn’t mean you can’t look beautiful. I think summer is the time of the year where our confidence needs to come back out from behind those winter trench coats and spring layers, this is the season to shine! Good skin is key, invest in your skin people and that doesn’t mean buy the most expensive products, it means get into a regime and invest 10 minutes a day to looking after your skin!

I have tested a lot of products and these are the ones I loved and have added to my daily routine or at least I would never travel without them!

Clarisonic Mia 2- I always bang on about this I know but I just have to say again how much it has transformed my skin. It gets rid of all of those bumps below the surface and leaves your skin smooth and glowing.

GlamGlow DreamDuo – This is my star product! It has completely transformed my skin. Its a nightly treatment, it smells super delicious, you can just smell it wafting while you fall asleep. It has two compartments when you open it, one is the dreamserum which is pearlescent and the other is a grey cream called dreamseal. It has a rich texture and I love putting on at night and waking up to really plumped, radiant skin. I am going to invest in more of GlamGlows products as their mud mask also blew me away!

Sephora’s charcoal scrub – This is super gentle and draws out impurities from the skin while restoring moisture. I love the smell of this scrub and it comes in a travel sized bottle. There are six different ingredients in the range so you can choose the one most appropriate for your skin, they all smell yummy!

Sephora’s charcoal wipes – I love these wipes and will definitely be restocking! They are textured on one side so they exfoliate and the other side is smooth so you can wipe of your make-up!

Bioderma Perfect Skin Suncare- This product really wowed me! It is great for hitting the beach as it is an all-in-one moisturiser, has a tint to smooth your complexion and also has oil control for 8 hours! In addition it is factor 50+ AND illuminates the skin so your highlight will be on fleek! Its great for oily skin but cakey on dry skin, the formula is light and really natural. I have the medium tone which blends into a vast range of skin-tones. This all-in-one aspect will save me a lot of space when I travel as for beach holidays it is my everything!! I love how it looks on me, I hate wearing makeup to the beach but also feel sometimes my skin needs a little coverage and this little baby does it all!

Bioderma Sun Mist – Again factor 50 which is great as protecting your skin is really important! I love that its a mist and you just spray it on wet skin from 20cm away. You don’t need to rub it in and you can’t even feel when its on. I usually find factor 50 products suffocating as they are so thick and sticky, the light formula is the best part! You can use it on your face too, simply spray it on your hands and rub it on.

Erborian CC Creme – This Korean skin therapy brand is a new favourite of mine. When my skin is decent I use this moisturiser daily instead of a foundation as the light coverage is enough to give an even skin tone. Of course you can apply your foundation on top of it for fuller coverage. It helps boost radiance while hydrating your skin. It is factor 25 so it gives you protection from those UV rays. It is sulphate and paraben free and contains a lot of skin food!

Decleor Soothing Eye Contour Gel – Perfect for soothing tired, puffy eyes. This gel feels really cool and also firms the skin.

Jergens Hydrating Coconut – It smells like a holiday and is super rich and creamy. Perfect for rehydrating dry skin after a day in the sun. It’s really nourishing and contains hydraluscence which illuminates your skin leaving you glowing!

Clarisonic Review

Cleansing_Mia2_lWhen I used to work at House of Fraser I worked by the Clarisonic counter and women were always raving about it, I’ve had quite problematic skin the last couple of years so decided to invest in one. I would always get tiny bumps under my skin and break-outs and I think its where make-up would get trapped in my pores combined with hormonal changes so I thought perhaps my skincare regime isn’t sufficient. After days of reading reviews of all the competing products such as Soniclear and Olay Pro-X I decided on the Clarisonic because of its sonic technology. I read the others damage your skin over time and can cause premature ageing and enlarged pores. Although generally good reviews, a bunch of people complained about enlarged pores with Olay’s which is something very difficult to reverse and it is cheaper but I didn’t think its worth the risk. People who had used both said the Clarisonic was better so I was sold.

The Sonic Method works with skin’s natural elasticity to thoroughly cleanse skin. Unlike Spinning devices, Clarisonic’s patented technology oscillates back and forth more than 300 movements per second to gently cleanse, remove impurities and beautifully transform skin so I guess thats what I paid for but hopefully it will last me years to come!

I used it with the deep pore cleansing brush head which is recommended for acne and make-up removal. I was amazed after my first use because my skin felt brighter and smoother,  I began using it twice a day as it says you can. By day 3 my skin had become dry and a bit sore, the machine is only on for one minute and it says it is fine to use it morning and evening but for me it was too much. I stopped using it for 2 days so my skin could recover and then tried again once a day, it was much better and after 2 weeks I no longer had spots and the bumps had almost gone. (You have a month to return your Clarisonic if you aren’t happy, I was considering it at that point but thought I should just try and use it differently). Then I changed to the sensitive brush which I use daily, even twice a day sometimes and it suits my skin fine. It’s important to work out which brush suits your skin type, the range is pretty big going from body brushes to cashmere which is soft enough to use on the eyes too!

I really feel my skin has been transformed, its been 3 months and I know I will have a Clarisonic for life!

  • It takes one minute to clean my face instead of 3 or 4.
  • I actually saved money as before I kept spending money on acne gels and face washes and treatments, now I just use a face cleansing gel with it and its perfect. In 3 months I would have spent probably £100 and the Clarisonic is only £25 more so by next month I will be saving money 🙂
  • My skin is transformed, I still have scars from before but my complexion is smooth and bright and it has definitely given me more confidence.
  • I love that I only have to charge it for a day once a month
  • The Mia 2 is the small travel friendly model, you can’t use body brush attachments but it is compact and comes with a travel case. Every brush has a cap to protect from bacteria.
  • The machine stays on for one minute, it vibrates so you know when to move on to your cheeks, forehead and nose so that you spend enough time on each area! One segment is 20 seconds so you can use it on your T-zone if its problematic or cheeks as they are a bigger area.
  • Its waterproof and can be used in the bath or shower.

I cannot recommend this product enough!! I think as long as you spend time figuring out a regime and brush head that suits your skin, you will not be disappointed! Also I have a great tip (probably not suitable for the cashmere) I use antibacterial hand-wash to clean my brush head, it removes all make-up stains and keeps the brush bacteria free. In the beginning my brush would get stained and the various soaps and brush cleaning products I used were not sufficient but that hand-wash keeps it looking and feeling as good as new! If it wasn’t advised to change the brush head every three months I would use something less harsh but the bristles are strong and because it feels and looks new I have decided to keep it on a little longer, I think if you keep it clean you could easily use it for 4-5 months. I compared mine to the one I was going to replace it with and they looked and felt the same so I will use it a little longer.

5 Stars from me, I think every girl should have one! In London they are available at all big department stores but in Dubai head to Sephora to get yours!

Micellaire Water

Micellaire water has infiltrated the beauty industry’s shelves and after using this magical product I want to know how it removes make-up so easily while claiming to be packed with natural ingredients. Is it really as good for our skin as we think?

I have been using Biodermas Micellaire water for a few years now and I have been really happy with the results. It feels gentle on the skin, removes make-up really easily and unlike other removers leaves your skin oil-free. It is great for oily skin, actually it has the texture of water so its great for all skin types. The formula was created in the 90’s in Paris to help Parisian women have an alternative to the regions harsh water. I decided to research this formula because I personally could not believe that it doesn’t contain harsh chemicals as the way it strips your make-up is insane! Darphin’s Education Manager, Emma Schulz, says ‘micellaire cleansing waters have mostly been adapted for sensitive skin and have been formulated with mild and non-irritating surfactants, suitable thanks to their gentleness.’ I find with Bioderma’s Micellaire water, if I wear full make-up, I need 5 cotton pads before I can wipe my face and there is no residue however yesterday I tried Sephora’s and after 2 pads my face was squeaky clean! It felt so gentle but I kept thinking there must be paint stripper in it because I was literally amazed.

Having researched its origins I know that they were trying to create something less harsh then water so it obviously does have minimal chemicals however each brand has their own formula. Sephora’s Micellaire water has a few more chemicals in it and a lot more natural things too actually, but just generally more ingredients. Bioderma’s is created for sensitive skin and so ingredients are simple and minimal, I personally have decided to keep both products stocked on my beauty shelf. After a night out I start taking off my make-up and can’t be bothered to finish because I am exhausted so after one or two cotton pads I get into bed. I will save Sephora’s Micellaire for those nights and use Bioderma’s when I have more time to remove my make-up. That reminds me, I bought a Clarisonic which achieves a make-up free exfoliated face in one minute so obviously that is my other option but I need a separate Clarisonic blog so you can hear about that next time.

For all my party girls…and lazy girls, grab yourself a bottle of Micellaire, there are many brands that make them but these are the two I have tried and tested. Banish those cleansing wipes from your skincare regime, they are NOT good for your skin. If you use them because they are easy and save time, instead place some cotton pads in a zip lock bag and pour in some micellaire water so they are ready for those nights when you just can’t be bothered.

Stubborn make-up can be easily removed however for waterproof make-up I still recommend using an eye make-up remover, micellaire does say that it can be used on eyes but I still find mascara hard to remove and rubbing lashes too much is not good for them. For the last few weeks I haven’t been using an eye make-up remover, just washing my face and micellaire for any residue but my lashes have reduced dramatically in thickness. If you know me, you know my lashes are probably my best physical attribute and sadly I neglected them. When you sleep in mascara it blocks your hair follicles which doesn’t allow new lashes to come through. It also makes lashes brittle and is just a BIG NO NO!! The oils in eye make-up removers are actually good for your lashes, they condition them overnight. I use Olive Oil to remove waterproof make-up, its great and 100% natural.

Using cotton wool is a good technique, Emma explains: ‘The use of cotton pads plays a major role in why they are so effective at removing makeup. Cotton is hydrophilic, and when you pour the micellar solution on the cotton pad, the hydrophilic heads are attracted to the cotton, leaving the hydrophobic tails sticking up to trap oil, wax based substances and dirt, like makeup and sebum. When applied to skin, micellar water and cotton pads cleanse the skin by acting like a magnet, attracting and entrapping impurities without harsh rubbing or scraping.’ This can be backed up by Bernard Pochic a trainer for Bioderma “Micelles are molecules that are made of fatty-acid esters,When you use a cleansing pad, the micelles deploy,” he says. Basically, the composition of the molecules makes them brilliant at trapping and gobbling up make-up, dust and pollution.

In conclusion Micellaire had no scaries hiding in the ingredient list, nothing harmful and it is as gentle as it says. Let me know if you have tried any other brands that you would recommend.
